Some Frequently Asked Questions About First Aid Courses & Qualifications

What qualification do you need to be a first-aider at work?

In the UK, there are two main first aid qualifications that are recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE):

      • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW): This is a one-day course that covers the basics of first aid, including CPR, defibrillator use, and how to deal with common injuries and illnesses. It is suitable for low-risk workplaces.
      • First Aid at Work (FAW): This is a three-day course that covers the same material as the EFAW course, as well as more advanced topics such as shock, burns, and fractures. It is suitable for medium- and high-risk workplaces.

Both courses must be accredited by a recognised awarding body, such as the British Red Cross, the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB), or OFQUAL-accredited qualifications regulated by Qualsafe and NUCO.

How long is a first aid at work course?

The length of a first aid at work course depends on the qualification that you are choosing.

In addition to the classroom training, you will also need to complete an assessment at the end of the course. This may involve a written test, a practical assessment, or a combination of both.

Is first aid at work a legal requirement?

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers are required to provide adequate first aid provision for their employees. This means that they must have at least one trained first aider on site for every 50 employees.

The type of first aid provision required will depend on the level of risk in the workplace. For low-risk workplaces, such as offices and shops, an EFAW-qualified first aider may be sufficient. However, for medium- and high-risk workplaces, such as factories and construction sites, an FAW-qualified first aider is required.

Can you do first aid at work online?

Yes, you can do a first aid at work course online. However, it is important to note that not all online courses are accredited. When choosing an online course, make sure that it is accredited by a recognised awarding body, such as the British Red Cross, the FAIB or OFQUAL-accredited qualifications regulated by Qualsafe and NUCO. We are OFQUAL accredited but at the moment we are not offering any fist aid courses online.

Online first aid at work courses typically involve a combination of e-learning and live webinars. The e-learning modules will cover the theory of first aid, while the live webinars will give you the opportunity to practice your skills with a qualified instructor.

What are the benefits of first aid training at work for businesses?

There are many benefits to having first aid trained employees at work. These include:

      • Improved employee safety and well-being: First aid training can help to reduce the severity of injuries and illnesses, and it can also help to prevent them from happening in the first place.
      • Reduced downtime: If an employee does get injured or ill, having a first aider on site can help to get them back to work more quickly. This can reduce downtime and save businesses money.
      • Increased employee morale: Employees appreciate knowing that their employer cares about their safety and well-being. Having first aid trained employees can help to boost morale and create a more positive work environment.

How to choose a first aid training provider

When choosing a first aid training provider, there are a few things to keep in mind:

      • Accreditation: Make sure that the provider is accredited by a recognised awarding body, such as the British Red Cross, the FAIB or or OFQUAL-accredited qualifications regulated by Qualsafe and NUCO.

      • Cost: Compare the costs of different providers before you book.
      • Location: Choose a provider that offers courses in a location that is convenient for your employees.
      • Feedback: Read reviews of different providers before you book to get an idea of the quality of their training.

First aid training is an important investment for any business. It can help to improve employee safety and well-being, reduce downtime, and boost morale.
