Content includes:

 

The role & responsibilities of a first aider; Assessing an emergency situation; Dealing with an unresponsive infant or child; Recovery position; CPR, AED, Choking, Asthma, Seizures, Poisoning, Burns and Scalds; External Bleeding; Eye, ear and nose conditions; many more conditions and illnesses.

Who is this course for?

 

The course is for you if you’re a newcomer to the workplace or have a wealth of experience. It will help you develop your knowledge and confidence and give you practical skills that will be invaluable not only in the workplace but in your everyday life.

Objective

 

The Paediatric first aid course will teach learners the knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations when looking after children.

Purpose

 

You will learn the skills and knowledge necessary to provide effective first aid to children and babies.

Structure

 

This qualification contains 2 mandatory units with a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 16 hours. Full details of this are in Appendix 1.

Learners must complete all assessments successfully within the registration period to achieve the qualification. The maximum period to achieve this qualification, including any referrals, is 6 weeks.

TQT is the total number of hours required for a learner to achieve this qualification. It has 2 elements:

Guided Learning Hours (GLH): The time a learner is being taught and assessed under the immediate guidance of a Trainer/Assessor. For this qualification this is 12 GLH (minimum).

Additionally, learners are required to spend four hours in preparation and study, for example undertaking pre-course reading, which will be directed by a trainer but not under their immediate guidance or supervision.

This qualification contains 2 mandatory units with a total value of 2 credits.

Outcomes

After taking this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Explain the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Minimise the risk of infection to yourself and others
  • Know when to use personal protection equipment when providing first aid
  • Identify the contents of a paediatric first aid kit
  • Know when an accident report/incident record is needed
  • Identify infants and children for the purposes of first aid treatment
  • Assess an emergency situation safely
  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey on an infant and a child
  • Know when to call for help
  • Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Place an infant and a child in the recovery position
  • Continually monitor an infant and a child in the recovery position
  • Assist an infant and a child experiencing a seizure
  • Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Know when to administer CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) to an unresponsive infant and an unresponsive child who is not breathing normally
  • Administer CPR using an infant and a child manikin
  • Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is choking
  • Identify when choking is mild
  • Identify when choking is severe
  • Give first aid to an infant and a child who is choking
  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
  • Explain the types and severity of bleeding in infants and children
  • Control external bleeding
  • Provide first aid to an infant and a child suffering from shock
  • Recognise an infant or a child who is suffering from hypovolaemic shock
  • Provide first aid to an infant or child who is suffering from hypovolaemic shock
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with bites, stings and minor injuries
  • Explain how to administer first aid for:
  • Bites
  • Stings
  • Small cuts
  • Grazes
  • Bumps and bruises
  • Small splinters
  • Nose bleeds
